Train would indeed be your best call. Its about thirty minutes and you take the train going to the coast. (Blankenberge - Knokke)

You can go by car, there is a motorway directly from Brussels to Gent, Follow the "E40" and the signs will get you there. This trip is about 45 minutes long, without too much traffic.

Train is your best bet. It is fastest and easiest. Also as an added bonus, if you are coming to Brussels on the Eurostar from London, your ticket includes an extension to Brugge or Gent within 24 hours of arrival in Brussels. Just spent the day in Brugge on Saturday. Not to be missed. Canals tour was great and chocolates - MMMM!

See my Gent to Brugge reply. Same applies to Brussels/Gent.

Trains which run from Brussels to the coast (Oostende, Blankenberghe... etc) all go through Gent first, then on to Brugge.

I am not speaking from experience, but probably by train. Check out Belgium in Lonely Planet's on-line guide. It's chock full of information.
